Beverly Russell

Board Member – Pheonix, AZ

Beverly Russell has worked to improve the health of Indian people for a culmination of seven years. Her experience includes the coordination of two urban Indian health programs within the American Indian Community House (AICH), a venture she began at the age of 18. During her time at AICH she served as coordinator of the HIV/AIDS Project Outreach Education program and coordinator of the Women's Wellness/Special Projects program.

Ms. Russell was selected to participate in the first class of the Kaiser Family Foundation Native American Health Policy Fellows program. Through this fellowship award she was placed as a legislative assistant at the United States Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. During the 106th Congress, she performed the staff work for Senator Daniel K. Inouye on health care, and census issues that affect American Indians, Alaskan Natives and Native Hawaiians. Her primary focus at the committee was the re-authorization of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act.

Beverly is a member of the San Carlos Apache Tribe. She was born and raised on the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona, later venturing to the east coast to attend Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ in the summer of 1992. She majored in Political Science and Anthropology. Currently, Ms. Russell serves as a board member for the National Indian Women's Health Resource Center in addition to serving as a national officer for Alpha Pi Omega Sorority Inc., the first Native American sorority in the country. Additionally, she is a member of the Kellogg Foundations Inaugural class of Emerging Leaders in Public Health Fellowship Program. Most recently, Ms. Russell was identified by the Smithsonian Institute National Museum of the American Indian as one of seven Native American standouts who represent the promising future of Indian people.
