The Work

Institute for Public Health Innovation

  • In 2009, CommonHealth ACTION launched the Institute for Public Health Innovation (IPHi) as a partner and collaborator in the improvement of community health throughout the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. IPHi provides leadership at the intersections of health by working across disciplines and sectors to develop, support, implement and evaluate creative strategies to advance the public's health. The Institute benefits from the early support of numerous funders, including Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Network of Public Health Institutes, Consumer Health Foundation, Virginia Department of Health, and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

By leveraging national, state and local relationships, bridging public and private sectors, cutting across disciplines and sectors, and focusing on public policy and underlying social conditions that contribute to health or illness, IPHi serves as a convener, facilitator and partner to government, community organizations, academia, philanthropy, business and other groups that help shape the region's health outcomes. IPHi's vision is to advance the capital region as an example for the nation for how to create a healthy society.
