The Work

The National NAACP Childhood Obesity Advocacy Manual

As part of its work to empower communities around the country and to support the adoption of healthy lifestyles, the National NAACP Health Programs Department has partnered with CommonHealth ACTION to develop a community-based advocacy manual focused on childhood obesity. The purpose of the manual is to educate communities about social, economic, and policy factors that currently fuel the childhood obesity epidemic, particularly in African American communities. The manual will provide communities with tools to assess neighborhood conditions and contexts related to childhood obesity and support the development of effective strategies to address those conditions and determinants, primarily through advocacy and policy change.

Once produced, the manual will be disseminated to 2000+ local NAACP chapters and it will serve as the basis for a pilot training program for chapters focused on community-generated advocacy and policy change.
