The W.K. Kellogg Foundation recently funded CommonHealth ACTION to commission an analysis of the Turning Point initiative’s partnership structures and sustainability plans. CommonHealth ACTION Principals previously held leadership and technical positions with the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) on the Turning Point initiative and other efforts focused on services provided by federal, state and local agencies in collaboration with communities, business, and individuals. The Turning Point effort comprised one of the largest public health systems building experiment in recent history that specifically supported non-governmental constellations as the driving engine in the collaborative process. Inaugurated in 1996, Turning Point: Collaborating for a New Century in Public Health was meant to transform and strengthen the current public health infrastructure so that states, tribes, communities, and their public health agencies may respond to the challenge to protect and improve the health of its community members. This nine-year, $27M initiative was developed and funded collaboratively by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to stimulate cross-sector collaboration aimed at improving the public health system’s capacity.
