Mark Cervero, MPH, CPH
Program Associate – Metro Washington, DC

Mark Cervero is a Certified Public Health professional (CPH) and a graduate of the School of Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he received his degree in Quantitative Policy Analysis (MPH). Upon graduation he was awarded the Lister Hill Health Policy Fellowship to pursue post-graduate work in Washington DC. During his fellowship Mr. Cervero immersed himself in the community engagement work of CommonHealth ACTION, while also contributing strong research and writing capabilities to the on-going work of the organization. Other projects for CommonHealth ACTION included planning and implementing a community learning experience for 60 participants from around the country focusing on the intersections between the economy and health; reviewing research for several grant proposals; and working with local county government to incorporate equity and social justice into their work.

While in graduate school, Mr. Cervero conducted research on state-level policy differences in organ donation guidelines, with a focus on the stark disparities in the receipt of transplants by people of color. He also collaborated on a project using clinical data and mapping techniques to observe the racial and geographic disparity in the distribution of HIV/AIDS in Birmingham. Also during his graduate work, he participated in an internship at a Ryan White Title IV clinic in Birmingham where he gained an insight into the myriad ways in which health disparities are manifested in the community. Shaped by these experiences in research and practice, Mr. Cervero's interests are intently focused on alleviating health disparities by addressing the non-medical determinants of health. He believes that this can be accomplished by translating and relating the findings of academic research into successful policy creation at all levels of government and also within the private sphere. This includes developing and advocating for a "Health in All Policies" framework—incorporating the health impacts of policy across all sectors of public and private life. Mr. Cervero's coursework at UAB included Public Health Policy, Health Economics, Health Disparities, Modeling & Simulation, and Empirical Methods for Health Research. Prior to attending UAB, Mark received his AB in Sociology from the University of Georgia.
