Preventing Violence in New Orleans: Helping Youth Thrive [Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund: 09.08]

CommonHealth ACTION was awarded a grant by the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund (BCKF) to convene community members and professionals interested in addressing the crisis of increased violence in New Orleans. CHA brought together stakeholders from human services agencies, local government, non-profits, local colleges/universities, community based organizations, youth, and other grassroots entities to identify root causes of violence.

The report developed from the convening highlights recommendations from key youth and adult stakeholders on ways to prevent future violence in the city, particularly as it relates to children and youth. It is hoped that this document will serve as a tool for community leaders and organizations that are actively pursuing a resolution to the senseless violence that hinders the city’s full recovery, and limits health and quality of life for its children, youth, and families. Given the nature of the topic, recognizing that much of its contents are of a negative nature, we offer this report in the true spirit of healing for a more positive future.
