Health Justice Youth Retreat [Consumer Health Foundation: 05.09]

CommonHealth ACTION planned and implemented a health justice retreat in June 2009 at the Pearlstone Conference and Retreat Center for the Consumer Health Foundation. During the retreat, CHA staff worked with several youth leaders from Planned Parenthood Youth Advocates, LifeStarts Youth and Family Services, and Sasha Bruce Youthwork in Wards 7 and 8 in Washington D.C. to teach participants about social determinants of health equity (SDOHE) and how to incorporate the SDOHE framework into their current health advocacy efforts. CommonHealth ACTION designed and facilitated the retreat experience.  Young people participated in activities to increase their understanding of the social determinants of health equity (SDOHE) and how to incorporate the SDOHE framework into their current health advocacy/justice efforts within their programs.

The goals of the retreat were to:

  • To provide youth with a practical understanding of social determinants of health equity;
  • To assist youth to apply social determinants of health principles to the work they do in their communities; and
  • To support youth groups to develop a plan of action to address one social determinant of health in their communities when they return home.
